Day 71: Listen to the Words of the Wise

Scripture Reading: Proverbs 22:17–21

Key Verse:

“Incline your ear, and hear the words of the wise, and apply your heart to my knowledge.” — Proverbs 22:17 (ESV)

Reflection

Wisdom is not automatic—it must be pursued, received, and applied. This passage marks the beginning of the Sayings of the Wise, urging us to listen carefully, internalize truth, and live it out.

Listening requires humility (v. 17). It’s one thing to hear wisdom, but it’s another to incline your ear—to lean in, focus, and absorb what’s being said. Many people hear truth but don’t apply it. Wise leaders and believers cultivate a teachable spirit, recognizing that true understanding comes from listening and reflection.

Wisdom brings stability and trust (vv. 18–19). Solomon reminds us that the words of the wise are meant to be pleasant to the soul and provide confidence in the Lord. When we build our lives on God’s wisdom, we develop an unshakable foundation—one that doesn’t crumble under pressure. Wise leadership isn’t just about knowing the right answers; it’s about living in a way that inspires trust and credibility.

Wisdom is given so that we may teach others (v. 21). A life built on wisdom isn’t just for personal benefit—it’s meant to be shared. Whether leading in business, ministry, or family, we are called to speak truth to others, offering reliable counsel and instruction. The best leaders aren’t just learners; they are teachers who pass wisdom on to the next generation.

This passage reminds us that wisdom is a lifelong pursuit. It requires a posture of listening, trusting, and applying, shaping not only our personal walk with God but also the way we lead and influence others.

Word Study: Incline (נָטָה, natah)

The Hebrew word natah means “to stretch out, bend toward, or extend.” It implies an intentional effort to lean in and receive instruction.

For leaders, natah is a call to actively seek wisdom, rather than passively waiting for it to come. It takes effort, discipline, and humility to listen and apply what is learned.

Challenge

Reflect on how well you listen to wisdom.

1. Are you actively seeking wise counsel, or are you relying on your own understanding?

2. Do you take time to reflect on and apply what you learn, or do you move on without real change?

Write down one way you can be more intentional about listening, applying, and sharing wisdom this week.

Leadership in Action

Consider how listening to wisdom influences your leadership.

• Are you surrounding yourself with wise mentors and godly counsel?

• How are you passing on wisdom to others—whether in family, ministry, or work?

Identify one leadership challenge where you need to seek wisdom before acting. Take time this week to listen, reflect, and apply what God is teaching you.

Prayer

Lord, give me a heart that seeks wisdom. Teach me to incline my ear, listen carefully, and apply Your truth in my life. Help me to trust in You, finding stability in Your wisdom rather than my own understanding. Make me a leader who not only learns but also shares wisdom, guiding others in truth and righteousness. May my life reflect Your wisdom in all that I do. Amen.
