Day 44: Righteousness Exalts a Nation
Scripture Reading: Proverbs 14:28–35
Key Verse:
“Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people.” — Proverbs 14:34 (ESV)
Reflection
Righteousness is not only an individual virtue—it has the power to shape families, communities, and even entire nations. In this passage, Solomon emphasizes how righteousness and wisdom in leadership bring stability and honor, while sin and folly lead to disgrace and destruction.
Leadership requires accountability (v. 28). Solomon highlights the relationship between leaders and the people they serve. A great population reflects wise and just leadership, while the decline of a people points to poor leadership. For leaders, this is a call to serve with integrity, recognizing that their decisions and character have far-reaching consequences.
Righteousness strengthens a nation (v. 34). Solomon makes a bold statement: the moral character of a people determines their strength and honor. When leaders and citizens walk in righteousness, they align themselves with God’s truth, creating a culture of justice, peace, and flourishing. In contrast, sin brings shame, division, and instability.
Wisdom in leadership brings stability and blessing (v. 35). Leaders who act with discernment and integrity gain the favor of those they serve, while foolishness or corruption leads to anger and distrust. For leaders, this is a reminder that influence is a stewardship, requiring humility, wisdom, and a commitment to God’s values.
Ultimately, this passage challenges us to consider how our actions contribute to the moral and spiritual health of our communities. Leaders who prioritize righteousness reflect God’s justice and love, inspiring others to walk in His ways and creating a legacy of honor and blessing.
Word Study: Exalts (רוּם, rum)
The Hebrew word rum means “to lift up or elevate.” In this context, it refers to the honor and strength that come to a nation when righteousness is upheld.
For leaders, rum highlights the transformative power of righteous living—not just for individuals but for entire communities and nations.
