Day 37: Wealth and Integrity
Scripture Reading: Proverbs 13:7–11
Key Verse:
“Better is a poor man who walks in his integrity than a rich man who is crooked in his ways.”
— Proverbs 13:7 (ESV)
Reflection
Wealth and integrity are two powerful forces that often compete for our attention and loyalty. In this passage, Solomon emphasizes that while wealth can be useful, integrity is far more valuable. How we handle wealth—and the pursuit of it—reveals much about our character and priorities.
True wealth is not always measured in material terms (v. 7). Solomon contrasts the appearance of riches with the reality of poverty, reminding us that a life of integrity is more valuable than financial success. Leaders are often tempted to prioritize results over righteousness, but Solomon’s wisdom calls us to place integrity above all else.
Wealth gained through dishonest means or selfish ambition leads to ruin (vv. 8, 11). Ill-gotten riches may seem rewarding in the short term, but they bring instability, harm, and eventually destruction. In contrast, wealth gained through hard work and wisdom grows steadily and provides lasting security.
This passage also highlights the importance of humility and stewardship. The way we handle wealth—whether much or little—reflects our values and trust in God’s provision. For leaders, this means modeling integrity in financial decisions and prioritizing what is right over what is expedient.
At its core, this passage reminds us that wealth without integrity is empty. True success comes from walking in righteousness, honoring God with our choices, and using our resources to bless others.
Word Study: Integrity (תֹּם, tom)
The Hebrew word tom means “wholeness, completeness, or uprightness.” It reflects a life of consistency and moral soundness.
For leaders, tom reminds us that integrity is foundational to trust, influence, and lasting success. It’s better to walk in uprightness with little than to compromise for gain.
Challenge
Reflect on how you handle wealth and integrity in your life and leadership.
1. Are you prioritizing financial success over righteousness in any area of your life?
2. How can you model integrity in your decisions, even when it’s costly or inconvenient?
Write down one practical way to align your financial habits or leadership decisions with God’s wisdom this week. Commit to walking in integrity, regardless of the outcome.
Leadership in Action
Consider how your approach to wealth and integrity influences those you lead.
• Are you setting an example of honesty and humility in your financial decisions?
• How can you encourage others to value integrity over material gain?
Identify one leadership situation where integrity should take priority. Take intentional steps this week to model righteousness, even if it means sacrificing short-term success.
Prayer
Lord, thank You for reminding me that integrity is more valuable than wealth. Teach me to walk in righteousness, making decisions that honor You and reflect Your character. Help me to trust in Your provision and to steward my resources with humility and wisdom. Guide my leadership to inspire others to prioritize integrity over gain, building a legacy that glorifies You. Amen.
