Day 25: The Mouth of the Righteous

Scripture Reading: Proverbs 10:6–14

Key Verse:

“The words of the godly are a life-giving fountain; the words of the wicked conceal violent intentions.” — Proverbs 10:11 (NLT)

Reflection

Words have power. They can build up, encourage, and give life, or they can tear down, deceive, and cause harm. In this passage, Solomon highlights the stark contrast between the speech of the righteous and the wicked, reminding us of the responsibility we have to use our words wisely.

The righteous person’s words are described as a “fountain of life” (v. 11). Like a refreshing spring, their speech nourishes and encourages those who hear it. Leaders who walk in righteousness have the opportunity to bring hope, clarity, and wisdom to their teams, families, and communities.

On the other hand, the wicked conceal violence in their words. Whether through lies, gossip, or manipulation, their speech brings harm rather than healing (vv. 6, 11). Solomon also warns about the dangers of reckless words and unchecked pride, which lead to conflict and destruction (vv. 8, 10, 14).

For leaders, this passage is a call to consider the impact of our words. Are we speaking with wisdom and grace, or are we allowing careless or harmful words to undermine our influence? The mouth of the righteous isn’t just about saying the right things—it reflects a heart aligned with God’s truth.

Word Study: Fountain (מָקוֹר, maqor)

The Hebrew word maqor means “spring” or “source.” It refers to a continual, life-giving flow of water. In this context, it emphasizes the nourishing and restorative power of righteous speech.

For leaders, maqor challenges us to be intentional about the words we speak, ensuring they bring life and encouragement to those we influence.

Challenge

Reflect on the words you’ve spoken recently in your leadership and relationships.

1. Are your words a source of life and encouragement, or have they caused harm or conflict?

2. How can you align your speech more closely with God’s truth?

Write down one specific way you can use your words to bring life this week, whether by encouraging someone, resolving a conflict, or speaking truth in love.

Leadership in Action

Think about how your words impact those you lead.

• Are you modeling wise and life-giving speech for your team or family?

• How can you create an environment where communication is constructive and encouraging?

Identify one leadership situation where you need to choose your words carefully. Take intentional steps this week to ensure your speech reflects wisdom, grace, and truth, fostering trust and unity among those you influence.

Prayer

Lord, thank You for the gift of words and the opportunity to use them for Your glory. Teach me to speak with wisdom and grace, making my words a fountain of life to those around me. Forgive me for any careless or harmful words I’ve spoken, and help me to reflect Your truth in all I say. Guide my leadership to be marked by speech that builds up and encourages others. Amen.
